THINGS NEED TO KNOW BEFORE GOING TO STUDY IN CANADA
As soon as you get a Canadian student visa, what you need to do is prepare your luggage and mind to go to school. Particularly for students from grade 6 and below, parents are required to come with them to take care of them. Older people are allowed to go alone, so it becomes even more important to prepare before you leave. And here is a check list of things to know and prepare before you leave.
Check list of documents to prepare
During the preparation process, you need to double check all your identification documents to make sure your hand luggage includes:
1. Original passport (scan and save to personal computer and make 2 more copies)
2. Identity card (copy + translation)
3. Birth certificate (copy + translation)
4. Pictures 3×4, 5×5 and 4×6 (8 cards each because you will need to make HSSV cards, buy bus tickets….)
5. Official letter of approval from the Canadian school
6. School payment receipt
7. Criminal record certificate (for students over 18 years old)
8. Guardianship certificate (for students under 18 or 19 years old depending on the province required)
9. Transcripts for the last 3 years of school and certificate of graduation from high school (for high school students)
10. High school transcripts, high school diplomas, current transcripts (for college and university students)
11. High school transcript, high school diploma, university score, university diploma, research topic, letter of recommendation from the school, employment confirmation (for graduate programs)
12. IELTS or TOELF ibt (if any)
13. Certificate of Merit or Certificate of participation in activities if any (copy + translation)
14. Letter of consent to issue a study permit from LSQ Canada
15. Personal belongings, school tools, Ipad, computer, USB, dictionary needle...
16. Air ticket (you can use the service of Cathay Pacific, Eva or Korea airlines….)
17. Confirm homestay/dorm/address and phone number of relatives and friends in Canada
18. Travel insurance (recommended to buy one month type)
19. Permit to enter the province of Quebec – CAQ (if you study in Quebec)
20. The visa stamped on the passport is a passport to travel between Vietnam and Canada within the allowed time limit.
In addition, you should bring with you a small notebook to record the necessary address, phone number, email. However, it is necessary to avoid recording among these the password numbers of credit cards, bank accounts ... to avoid being taken advantage of by bad guys.
Regulations to follow
Before boarding your plane to Canada, pack your checked baggage carefully into 2 pieces and 1 handbag. Maximum weight for each piece of checked baggage is 23kg, for hand baggage is 10kg. To avoid loss, be sure to include the full name and address of where you will be staying in Canada on your checked baggage.
Since your flight is very long and requires transit, do not try to cram too many things into your hand luggage. Compact hand luggage will make it more convenient for you to check-in many times.
Canada prohibits the import of meat products in any form. If you do not feel it is absolutely necessary to bring meat products, you should follow this rule to avoid inconveniences during immigration procedures.
In terms of money, you should only bring about $5,000 in cash and credit cards. If you want to bring more, you need a license from the State Bank. In addition, for safety and convenience in payment, you can open an account in Canada first.
Besides, you also need to be aware of receiving a study permit (Study Permit) when you arrive at the Canadian Aviation Customs area. The duration of your stay in Canada will depend a lot on your study permit. About 6 months before your study permit expires, you need to apply for an extension or you will be deported back to your home country.
Notes on the journey to study in Canada
Because most international students choose Economy class tickets, the space on the plane is often uncomfortable. Therefore, you should occasionally rotate your wrists and ankles to relieve fatigue and take a short nap to maintain strength.
If you come to Canada in the summer, you do not need to bring any special clothes. But in winter, you should have warm clothes, boots, scarves, gloves… in hand luggage. When the flight is 1 hour from Canada, please put on extra warm clothes, fasten your seat belt and sit up straight to avoid aches or heatstroke when you arrive.
Another thing to keep in mind for international students arriving on a connecting flight to Canada is that you must find your own baggage in the conveyor belt and transfer it to the domestic airline. Many cases have lost luggage due to the misunderstanding that their luggage will be automatically transported to the final station.
Finally, you must absolutely avoid bringing goods to someone you don't know at the airport, on the plane or at the airport.
There are many things that you need to prepare before coming to Canada to study. So, please prepare as soon as possible and double check to make sure nothing is missed. You should write down a list of things to bring with you for easy review. Wish you a smooth journey and quickly integrate into the student community in Canada.
